What is a 'kin?'

Short for kinship, it means that I relate to (or otherwise see myself in) a character! Originally the term was derived from 'otherkin' subculture, although in my case, I am not using it in a spiritual sense. I do not literally believe I am these characters, or these characters reincarnate.

What is the purpose of kinning?

I think that it really varies for people. Personally, it brings me comfort when I have a character that I kin in media I enjoy. I deal with identity disturbance in reality and have a difficult time understanding myself. I often feel very different from my peers and colleagues, but through comparing myself to fictional characters, I am able to express myself and who I am to others in a more coherent way. Having kins also helps me to process my difficult emotions or experiences, especially if the character exhibits positive growth or overcomes challenges that are similar to the ones I have faced in real life.

Are you one of those 'no doubles' people?

Nope! Because I am still my own person, I am absolutely alright with other people relating to or finding comfort in the same characters as me. If anything, it makes me think we would be good friends if we share kins!

Some of your kins are horrible people. Why is that?

Well, I don't necessarily think I am a bad person (most of the time). Again, my kins help me feel like I am able to overcome my challenges and understand myself. They can represent me at my "best" or my "worst" (metaphorically). They can guide me on how not to behave, just as much as they teach me how to be good.

Can I call you by the names of the characters you kin?
